During the Farewell Pilgrimage (1) the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, praised and extolled God, reminded and preached, and he mentioned in his speech a narrative; He said,"And I bid you to be good to women! For they are but in your custody and you have no other right over them unless they commit an evident lewd act. If they do, desert them in bed and chastise them gently. If they obey you, do not act against them. You are indeed entitled to certain rights over your women and your women are indeed entitled to certain rights over you. It is your right over them that they may not allow people you do not like to step on your flooring and that they may not admit into your homes people you do not like. And their right over you is that you provide them with good clothing and good food." Footnotes: (1) (Ḥajj) The pilgrimage to Makkah during the first half of the month of Thul-Ḥijjah, which is the fifth pillar of Islām. (2) They are like captives in your possession, for they can suffer injustice and not find someone to stand by them. Click on ḥadīth to read more
